surrealism in architecture3D modelling done on Blender
Inspired by Dali and Margaritte, I wanted to create transformative, immersive and engaging environments and integrate surrealism with architecture. I wanted to create worlds that are playful, colourful yet futuristic in style and nature.

Bubbletecture: A Children's Igloo3D modelling done on Blender
A 3D model of an elementary school that I designed from scratch. The physical structure of this building is inspired by Lady Gaga's iconic bubble costume. I also designed the interior of some rooms, including the classroom and the children's playroom. Many windows were added into the structure to provide children with greater exposure to the outside world and foster greater imagination.

Social media content creation for The School of Positive PsychologyI made use of cartoons and easy-to-understand comics to convey concepts of mental health and psychology in a relatable manner. I successfully increased the follower count by almost 3 folds, and the amount of user engagement increased as well.

The Bread Museumdigital art done on iPad
This piece was inspired by my immense love for bread. My vision for this museum was to showcase the magic of bread, including a "build-you-own bread shop and a bread factory in the museum. The structure and design of the bread museum is highly inspired by that of Salvador Dali’s Museum in Spain.

What Is Singaporean Food3D modelling on Blender
Through this piece, I wished to convey Singapore’s multiculturalism through its diverse culinary scene. The 3D model of a building represents a public housing flat, our city’s multi-ethnic melting pot. The windmills, solar panels and driverless transportation depicted represents the environmentally-conscious technology present in Singapore. I also integrated collages in my work to offer multiple dimensions of our culture: steamed layer cake acts as a communal table for activities to encourage greater community spirit.
I then created another digital illustration piece in response to "What is Singaporean Food", which you can find below. |
This Is Singaporean FoodDigital art done on iPad
While portraying Singapore’s positives, I wanted to also evaluate Singapore’s shortcomings in a parallel piece. I chose to highlight Singapore’s struggles with homophobia, discrimination against transient labourers, and the increasing isolation felt by Singaporeans. I titled this piece “This Is Singaporean Food” to answer the question posed by my previous artwork and complete my portrait of Singapore. I wanted this piece to juxtapose with my previous piece: while food once united Singaporeans, food is now what isolates them here.

EerieDigital art done on iPad
When I visited Japan in 2018, I was intrigued by the bustling and active night life in Japan. However, I also imagined myself walking through these streets alone at night- the lights following my own footsteps, the moon always tailing behind me. That imagination frightened me to bits, and I hence wanted to depict the eeriness of the city when there is no one around in this big, bright and bustling city.

Reaching For More3D modelling done on Blender
I wanted to depict the competitiveness, the grit, anger, frustration that comes with being Chinese. The hand/ arm is made with hard metal to illustrate the harsh competitiveness faced in the Chinese culture. In contrast, the small, soft pink balls are Tang Yuan (mochi balls) cooked in sugar syrup and are eaten during important Chinese occasions and represent unity. The metallic texture is spreading onto the Tang Yuan, depicting the frequent competitiveness, comparison and struggle to "be the best" even among family members, thus ruining the purity, innocence and original symbolic representation of Tang Yuan.

Poster design for students' council election"Hwallelujah" is the name of my friend's team running for Students' Council. I made use of the school colours- red and yellow in the poster design. I overlapped the hair of the faces to create a more visually-appealing appearance of the poster, while also signifying the figurative intertwining of the team members to depict their teamwork.

Designing my school's 100th anniversary heritage trial programme bookletIn celebration of my school's 100 years anniversary, I helped design the programme booklet for the heritage trial event in 2019. This heritage trial was open to public. This heritage trial brings the participants to all the significant landmarks in our school, and provides the background and history of the various landmarks.

Mental health exhibition in schoolMy group of friends and I founded and designed an exhibition to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of peer support. Illustrated some pieces to be featured in the exhibition for a more vivid, colourful, relatable explanation of the various complex mental health disorders. Used interactive pieces to depict the effects of hoarding, compulsive thinking and obsession for OCD and eating disorders to promote greater empathy and understanding. eg. Audio for students to listen to the daily thoughts of a person struggling with anxiety.
|
Re-designed illustrationsI re-designed and edited my previous illustrations. I wanted to depict the complicated and complex feelings of anxiousness more profoundly through my new illustrations. For the "Anxiety" illustration, I included many more shadows of the "devil" to heighten the sense of eeriness and fear that the little boy felt. In the "OCD" illustration, I included many hands all around the girl to depict the pressure she feels to compulsively and obsessively "check" things around her.

Animation for straw-free SingaporeCreated a simple little animation for my talented friend who started her own initiative to create a straw-free Singapore! She has reached great lengths with her publicity and environmental advocacy, from persuading different cafes around Singapore to go straw-free to even giving talks in primary schools. She is amazing, and check out her initiative at @strawfreesingapore on Instagram.

colours, colores, yan she, se"colores", "yan she" and "se" are the words "colors" in Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. I took these pictures using my iPhone during my travels over the years to Spain, Taiwan and Japan, and I edited the images to give a dreamy, surreal-like feeling to them, while ensuring that I brought out and emphasised the colours of the images. I wanted to show how the seemingly mundane life in the modern, developed world is actually vivid, colourful and interesting.

4 years of growthA selection of my favourite pictures I took of my sister throughout a period of 4 years. The images are arranged in chronological order, and you can clearly see the change in hair, style, facial expression and image of my sister. During these 4 years, my sister was studying in America, while I was in Singapore.

california roll made with a secret recipesculpture made with air-dry clay, acrylic paint
This art piece is a criticism of the meat-eating culture in the world today. I wanted the little figurines around the seaweed of the California hand-roll to represent the "cute" animals that we are eating and consuming, neglecting the lives and rights of the animals.

Chinese architecture: Reimaginedair-dry clay and acrylic paint
I wish to challenge what traditional Chinese Architecture looks like. A lot of traditional buildings are largely monotonous in colour. I hence deliberately painted the sculptures of traditionally Chinese architectural styled buildings with bright colours to show how vibrant these buildings can be. Moreover, I deliberately positioned these buildings such that there were circular: I wanted to reference the modern, circular architectural style that we often see today, and integrate that style with Chinese architecture.

character design
Experimented with different facial expressions, movements, gestures to represent different emotions, actions of this character I designed. I wanted to experiment with and understand how different angles, lighting affect the facial expressions of characters, which is essential for creating animations.

self-portrait, a reflectionI wanted to depict the conflict between my Chinese identity and the Americanisation of my society and my upbringing. Growing up, I never really had an interest in understanding Chinese roots and I took on more liberal, Western values -- I look Chinese, but I do not fully identify as one. It was only recently that I started feeling rather ashamed of my ignorance . The measuring tape on my reflection's face represents the "flatness" of Chinese faces, which I used to be ashamed and insecure of.
